Physics applied in medicine

a) Knowledge:

After completing the Master's program in Applied Physics in Medicine, the graduates will reach:

• to know the advanced notions in the field of medical physics, which involve a critical understanding of theories and principles;
• to know the analysis methods and the criteria for choosing the appropriate solutions to achieve the specific performances;
• know the working formulas for calculations with physical quantities using the principles and laws of physics appropriately;
• to know the language specific to the field;
• to know the physical phenomena and to interpret them by formulating hypotheses and operationalizing the key concepts and the appropriate use of the laboratory equipment;
• to know the constructive principles and the functioning of the medical equipment and to explain the way of using it for the benefit of the patients;
• to know the basic concepts from related fields (Physics, Biology, Biochemistry, Medicine) in order to be used appropriately in complex teams;

b) Skills:

After completing the Master's program in Applied Physics in Medicine, the graduates will reach:

• to apply correctly the methods of analysis and the criteria for choosing the appropriate solutions to achieve the specific performances;
• deduce working formulas for calculations with physical quantities using appropriate principles and laws of physics;
• to compare the theoretical results offered by the literature with those of an experiment carried out within a professional project;

• describe physical systems using specific theories and tools (experimental and theoretical models, algorithms, schemes, etc.);
• to apply the principles and laws of physics in solving theoretical or practical problems, in conditions of qualified assistance;
• to correctly apply the analysis methods and the criteria for choosing the appropriate solutions to achieve the specified performances;
• to identify the use of IT basics (algorithms, programming languages, specific software, numerical modeling) in the study of physics;
• explain the specific steps required to develop algorithms for solving problems of medium difficulty;
• use the computer to control experiments or processes and to acquire data;
• to compare the results given by numerical models or simulations of physical phenomena with data provided by literature and / or experimental measurements;
• to develop medium complexity algorithms for automation and visualization of processes, data acquisition, processing and interpretation;
• to identify and analyze the processes and physical-medical phenomena for solving the problems of diagnosis and medical treatment;
• to interpret the clinical, physical-medical data based on the formulation of hypotheses and concepts;
• to use the methods of statistical and computer analysis in the processing of clinical data for diagnosis and medical treatment;
• to estimate the degree of uncertainty of the experimental results obtained and of the implementation of the physical models in problems of diagnosis and medical treatment;
• to implement physical models to ensure the proper functioning of medical equipment in diagnosis, clinical investigation, medical treatment;
• to process the experimental data in a logical and appropriate way for the attending physician, effectively contributing to the act of diagnosis and medical treatment;
• to use the computer to interface medical devices in order to purchase medical data and process them in a form accessible to the attending physician;
• to interpret the results given by the numerical models and the simulations of some irradiation doses (isodoses, irradiation plan) on phantoms with the real data measured in different points of the irradiated volume;
• to apply IT methods to ensure management in hospitals;
• to prepare and present reports on the physical principles of operation of modern devices used in diagnosis (MRI imaging, PET, endoscopy) and medical treatment (radiotherapy, ultrasound, etc.) in front of an informed public;
• to write and present scientific reports in the field of Medical Physics, of significant results from medical units equipped with modern, high-performance equipment;
• to make connections between knowledge in the physical-medical field and in related fields (physics, computer science, biology, chemistry) in order to obtain new useful results, both for diagnosis and for medical treatment);

c) Responsibility and autonomy:

After completing the Master's program in Applied Physics in Medicine, the graduates will reach:

• to manage complex technical or professional activities or projects, by taking responsibility for making decisions in unpredictable study situations;
• take responsibility for managing professional development;
• to participate in some concrete experiments of diagnosis and medical treatment;
• to present scientific seminars and to popularize some notions of biophysics, medical physics, radiotherapy, dosimetry, etc .;
• to critically analyze a specialized report, scientific communication with medium difficulty in the field of medical physics;
• to be autonomous in the context of the maintenance and repair of medical equipment, including in situations that require an interdisciplinary approach;
• to use autonomously the information sources and the resources of communication and assisted professional training (Internet portals, specialized software applications, databases, online courses, etc.) both in Romanian and in a language of international circulation;
• to carry out research internships in various medical units in order to become familiar with and operate with modern medical equipment, to obtain interesting results and to elaborate reports on the activity carried out.
