The Faculty of Physics and Mathematics is one of the elite faculties of the West University of Timișoara and offers a high-quality education, characterized by flexibility and interdisciplinarity, being a reference center of intellectual and scientific endeavors for Timișoara and Romania. Combining 72 years of tradition with modern methods, at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics students' knowledge is perfected through research at international standards and through the variety of courses taught.
In 1948, the 3-year Faculty of Mathematics and Physics was established within the Pedagogical Institute of Timișoara, which increased its study period to 4 years starting in 1952, and from 1957 the duration of studies became 5 years. In 1962, the 5-year Pedagogical Institute of Timișoara transformed into the University of Timișoara, and from 1990 it became the West University of Timișoara.
Going through successive transformations, the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics has established its current model, being an important center of education, science and culture. Its main role is to train specialists in Physics (Researchers, Physicists, Teaching Staff) and after the creation of the specializations of Informatics Physics, respectively Medical Physics and specialists with double specialization which are appreciated in perspective as specializations of the future, corresponding to the current and future needs, for the educational process, the economic and research environment.
For those who want to explore in depth the topics that interest them in order to work in research, in higher education or to become autonomous researchers, to provide high-level consulting, there are then 3-year doctoral programs.
The wide range of fields in which our graduates have found employment shows that our faculty offers its graduates a basic training that can be easily applied in the most diverse fields, such as:

LICENSE
The documents required for the application file for undergraduate university study programs within the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics are the following:
1. Identity card / bulletin;
2. Birth certificate;
3. Marriage certificate - if applicable;
4. Baccalaureate diploma or equivalent;
o Candidates who passed the baccalaureate exam in the sessions corresponding to the 2025-2026 school year can upload to the admission platform and present at the collection points the documents necessary for the admission process from the UVT offices and from the county admission centers organized by the UVT, for the session of admission immediately following the session in which they passed the baccalaureate exam, instead of the baccalaureate diploma, the certificate issued by the pre-university education unit in the original or a legalized copy, which mentions the general average from the baccalaureate exam, the grades obtained in the tests taken at this exam, the validity period and the fact that the diploma has not been issued.
5. Medical certificate issued by the family doctor, the doctor from the school medical office or from a student medical office, no older than 90 days from the date of its presentation at the document collection office, attesting whether the candidate is fit to enroll in university studies and, if applicable, the chronic conditions from which the candidate suffers (neuropsychiatric, psycho-pathological, pulmonary, dermato-venereal, handicap (type, degree) etc.). Specific learning disorders (dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia etc.) or possible special educational requirements will be attested by a diagnostic certificate;
6. Certificate certifying completion of another undergraduate university study program (completed or not at the time of submitting the file), in which the funding regime in which each year of studies was completed (with funding from the state budget/ with fee, if it is/was carried out at a state higher education institution in Romania) and, if applicable, the years and semesters of studies in which the student benefited from the scholarship, respectively its type - if applicable.
MASTERS
(1) The documents required for the application file for the master's degree programs within the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics are the following:
1. Identity card / bulletin;
2. Birth certificate - for UVT graduates of undergraduate studies who were admitted to undergraduate studies starting in 2020, it is not mandatory, and can be taken from the existing file for the undergraduate studies cycle, except in the case where the candidate has been issued another birth certificate since that time;
3. Marriage certificate - if applicable;
4. Bachelor's degree or diploma equivalent to it, accompanied by the supplement to the diploma, or certificate of completion of undergraduate university studies, accompanied by the transcript, for candidates who graduated from undergraduate university studies in the current year; UVT graduates of undergraduate studies in the current year do not need to upload the certificate of completion of undergraduate studies and the transcript on the admission platform in order to apply for master's studies in the same year, the results of the final examination of undergraduate studies , respectively the average of the years of undergraduate university studies, being taken over in the candidate's file directly by the admission committees of the UVT faculties;
5. Any of the prizes obtained at the FFM Competition can be equivalent to a grade of 10 or any of the grades taken into account at the admission exam to the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the West University of Timișoara, according to the Regulation on the organization and conduct of the admission process for university study programs at the undergraduate study cycle of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics.
Since 2017, the Physics field at the West University of Timișoara is constantly found in the oldest and most prestigious international ranking of universities, Academic Ranking of World Universities / ARWU - also known as the Shanghai ranking.
